Sheldon College is the 2021 State Champion for Primary School Tennis, having won the top division of this year’s Tennis Queensland Primary Schools Cup.

The Sheldon College team entered the State Finals as Champions of the Metropolitan East Region and faced off against the best teams from around the state.  In a great display of consistently high-quality tennis, the boys from Sheldon went through the entire tournament undefeated, to cap a remarkable five years of tennis development at the College.

Not having had tennis courts or tennis coaching available at the College prior to 2017, the College invested in six floodlit hard courts and a full-time coach and opened a Tennis Queensland affiliated tennis centre in January 2017, to service the needs of the Sheldon College community.  Our top three players in this year’s State Championship-winning team all joined our program in that first year of operation and have since developed through our program over the past five years.  Today, the program caters to around 250 Sheldon College student tennis players as well as to members of our adult community.

Director of the Sheldon Academy of Sport, Mr David Savage, paid tribute to the coaching staff involved, saying, “Huge credit for this result goes to our inaugural (and ongoing) Head Tennis Coach, Jake Alchin, and to other key members of our coaching staff, such as Huey Hoang and Nathan Eshmade. The work they’ve done in not only identifying and nurturing talented students, but creating an inclusive, family-friendly tennis club at the College, is simply extraordinary.”

In addition to winning the top division, Sheldon College also competed as the Metropolitan East Champions in all three of the other divisions on offer at the State Finals.  The College’s red ball (Year 4 and below) girls’ team finished as state runners-up, while our red ball (Year 4 and below) boys finished fifth in Queensland and our orange ball (Year 5 and below) team finished sixth.

The members of Sheldon’s Championship-winning team are Arkin Amin-Patel, Jake Spurrell, Lachlan Harriden, Sean Ryoo and Curtis Lee See.
