Sheldon College Year 9 Students, Alison Wu and Madelize Breet received a Highly Commended Award for their educational product for teen consumers at The Buy Smart Competition 2018.

The Competition is run by the Office of Fair Trading and provides students in Year 4 to 12 the opportunity to educate consumers on products and services before making a purchase.

Alison and Madelize created “The Budget Travellers” to provide information to teenagers to better prepare them before and during their travels on what to look for, how to be safe and how to budget. Topics included in their suite of educational collateral included:

  • Planning for overseas travel
  • Accessing cash overseas
  • Budgeting
  • Saving Money/Minimising costs
  • Necessary travel costs

Madelize and Alison say the inspiration for addressing this issue in their competition entry was their desire to travel in the future.  To do this, they wanted to learn more about effectively planning for overseas travel and how to manage money while on holidays to ensure they are well prepared.
