Sheldon College superstar athlete, Jamie Hiscock, and Sheldon Academy of Sport Head Athletics Coach, Mr Ben Norton, have been selected to represent Australia at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina (October 1-6).

Jamie Hiscock is one of six Youth Olympians who has been nominated as a Local Sports Star.

Jamie is a cross country and steeplechase exponent. She started her career in the Sheldon College Athletics Program and remains under the tutelage of Ben Norton at the Sheldon Academy of Sport.

The brilliant young talent could not have chosen two more gruelling athletic disciplines, yet it was a pathway she was destined to follow.

“I had always enjoyed running and playing basketball since the age of four, and started doing weekend meets and running with my sister,’’ Jamie said.

“However, it wasn’t until I was old enough to represent school sport at the age of 10 that I started getting really involved in cross country.

“For steeplechase, my first race was when I was 13 and I have loved racing ever since.’’

Like all elite athletes, Jamie has been driven by a burning desire to succeed, a trait evident when she was a little girl running around with friends in the playground.

“I was always very competitive with my friends in the playground since Kindy and it wasn’t until cross country and athletics carnivals in Year 4 where I really wanted to start training properly for running to see where it could take me,’’ she said.

The Sheldon College Year 12 student said she was inspired in her career after attending the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April.

“It was one of the most amazing experiences to date,’’ she said.

“To be able to watch my favourite events and idols on home soil was something I will never forget and it has certainly inspired me to represent Australia on the Commonwealth stage one day.’’

Jamie’s sporting career at Sheldon College began as a Preppie in 2006. Over the years, Jamie has represented the College in a myriad of the sports but it has been in running that she has truly excelled.

In all her time as a Cross Country and Track & Field athlete, Jamie has trained and developed with only one coach, our very own Mr Norton, making her truly a ‘Sheldon-grown’ athlete.

Making Jamie’s selection into the Australia team even sweeter, is the selection of Mr Norton as coach of Australia’s distance runners for this prestigious event.”

This is a just reward for Mr Norton, who has produced a steady line of the state, national and even international champions from his College-based program.

We look forward to cheering on Jamie this October!
