Two Sheldon College students are among those who have been chosen to carry the Queen’s Baton through Queensland in the lead up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Accomplished athlete Jamie Hiscock and top tennis player Lara Walker will play their part when the Queen’s Baton Relay comes to Ipswich and Cleveland as it journeys towards its final destination, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony, taking place on 4 April 2018.  The two highly awarded and accomplished sporting talents have been given the prestigious once-in-a-life time opportunity to be a part of the Queen’s Baton Relay when it arrives here in Australia. Year 11 student Jamie Hiscock and Year 8 student Lara Walker were thrilled to hear of their selection and are very proud and excited to be given the opportunity to be a part of Commonwealth Games history.

Jamie Hiscock was nominated by Sheldon College for the Queen’s Baton Relay and was recently named 2017 Sheldon College Secondary Sports Person of the Year. Jamie has been selected to represent Australia at the 2018 World School Cross Country Championships in Paris and this year, Jamie also won Gold in the Steeplechase and Bronze in the 1500m at the Athletics Australia National Championships in Sydney.

A rising talent, Lara Walker was nominated by Longines for the Queen’s Baton Relay and this year Lara represented Australia at the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals in the Czech Republic, where Australia reached the Quarter Finals.  Last year, 12-year old Lara was selected for the All Australian Under 19 Secondary Schools Team.

The Queen’s Baton has travelled the globe and will arrive in Australia on 24 December and will be carried through every Australian State and Territory over 100 days, covering a huge distance of 40,000 kilometres. The Queen’s Baton Relay is a symbol of peace and friendly competition between Commonwealth Nations and Territories and the Baton contains a message from Her Majesty the Queen and will be read out at the Opening Ceremony.
