Congratulations to Sheldon College Alumni students, Isobel De Leon (2014 Graduate) and Micayla Van Wyk (2016 Graduate), on being selected as finalists in the 2020 Queensland Music Awards (QMA) in the category of Soul/Funk/RNB.

In order to receive these nominations both Isobel and Micayla, along with many others from across the State, were required to submit up to three of their own songs for judging.

Another Sheldon College Alumni student, Shelley Bishop (2008 Graduate), Manager of Studio 301, also played a vital role in the recording, mixing and mastering of the album featuring Micayla’s submission songs.

“From an early age Micayla wowed audiences with her phenomenal voice,” stated Director of Co-Curricular, Mr Darren Harvey.

“Her vocal talents have always been far beyond her years and this was particularly evident when she starred as Effie in the Broadway show Dreamgirls, at the tender age of 15 years old.”

Both Isobel and Micayla were actively involved in the outstanding arts programs on offer during their time here at Sheldon College. Isobel in particular was a dedicated participant in all facets of the arts program’s offerings.

“Isobel has always been an outstanding Arts student,” said Mr Darren Harvey.

“Whilst she has obvious strengths as a vocalist, the very nature of her personality lends itself to being extremely talented across various musical instruments, visual art and musical theatre.  She is a creative soul through and through.”

The final decision will be made by a panel of national and international music industry professionals who will assess each entry based on the category in which it has been entered. Each of the performance items will be judged on their lyricism, musicality, innovation, creativity and commercial potential.

Winners will be announced at the Queensland Music Awards Ceremony being held at the Fortitude Valley Music Hall on Tuesday 3 March.
