A comprehensive Access Program has been developed for Year 11 and 12 students. Activities include:
Work Experience induction,
Core Skills Training,
Guest speakers from Business, Industry and Government,
Young Person’s Survival Guide,
Excursions to TAFE and University,
Cultural Enrichment programs,
Careers and QTAC information.
Year 12 students nominate a staff member with whom they would like to develop a mentoring relationship to enhance their learning outcomes. Teachers have been provided with best practice strategies and professional development to introduce Mentoring at Sheldon College. This program is in line with the Education and Training Reforms for the Future. Sheldon College is providing this innovative program now so that each Year 12 student is supported and has a key person who guides them.
Year 11 students have a Year 12 mentor who provides support, advice and assistance with their studies.
In order to provide extension activities for high achieving Year 12 students, Sheldon College hosts a “Gain the Edge” Conference at the beginning of each year. This full day conference is attended by students who are entering into Year 12 and have been identified as having exceptional academic talent.
This comprehensive program includes sessions on:
Team Building/Problem Solving.
In addition, we provide ongoing activities throughout the year. Workshops, tutorials and master classes are features of this program.
Students take advantage of:
Courses at TAFE,
Courses on-line through the Open Learning Institute of TAFE,
Personal study at College or home,
School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship Programs,
Stand Alone Programs.
Students can elect to be involved in casual Work Experience on a needs basis. All Year 11 students will be engaged in Work Experience in July. This involves a comprehensive induction program and establishes links with business and industry in accordance with current legislation.
Employers provide formal feedback on student performance to the College. This is structured according to the National Employability Skills Framework.
TAFE Brisbane: Students are offered a wide variety of courses at TAFE. All programs are Nationally Recognised and give students credit for future courses. Full day programs are available and offerings range from Beauty Therapy, Business, Engineering, Events, Fashion, Horticulture, Information Technology and Justice Administration to name a few.
TAFE Queensland SkillsTech: Year 11 and Year 12 Program - Students are offered a wide variety of courses at TAFE Queensland SkillsTech. All programs are Nationally Recognised and give students credit for future courses. Full day programs are available and offerings range from Automotive, Building and Construction, Engineering and Electrotechnology to name a few. Year 10 Program – TAFE Queensland SkillsTech offer Year 10 students the opportunity to participate choose three areas of interest. Industry areas range from Electrical, Carpentry, Plumbing, Furnishing, Engineering, Mechanics and Flooring just to name a few. Students will complete individual competencies from various programs but will not complete a full certificate or obtain any QCE credits.
Pathways to Diploma of Engineering: Through our partnership with TAFE Queensland SkillsTech we are able to offer our Year 11 Technology Studies students the opportunity to complete a Pathways to Diploma of Engineering Program. This program offers the students competencies from the Certificate III in Manufacturing Technology and the Certificate III in Engineering – Technical over two years. These students will be offered direct entry into the Diploma of Engineering – Technical post Year 12.
