String Ensembles

Pizzicato Strings

Pizzicato Strings provides an opportunity for students in the Junior and Middle College to further develop ensemble and performance skills. In 2012, they joined with Matthew Flinders College, Buderim, in a day of exciting workshops and performances. In 2013 and 2015, Pizzicato Strings competed in the Redlands Eisteddfod winning first place in the Middle School section. The group regularly performs in Sheldon Ensemble Concerts and String Soirees. Entry level is Preliminary - Grade 4 AMEB or equivalent.

Rehearsal Venue - PA 9 (Band Room).

Times - Monday, 7:15am to 8:15am.

Conductor - Mrs Karen Blair.

Sheldon String Quartet

Selected by invitation from the Sheldon Strings, the String Quartet is often invited to play for official College events and functions such as the NAB Client Appreciation Evening and the Mayoral Redfest Business Reception. They are also very active in performing at private functions such as weddings and significant birthdays.

Over the years, this group has been successful in competitions, winning Sheldon College’s Ensemble of the Year in 2010.

The String Quartet performs a wide range of music, most of which is taken from the professional repertoire.

Times - Thursday, 7:00am to 8:15am.

Fiddlestix (Year 4 Strings)

This ensemble is drawn from the students who continue into Year 4, after having completed the Year 3 string program. The commitment is year-round with one rehearsal per week and lessons scheduled during the College academic timetable. Entry into this group is automatic for any student taking private or group lessons. Students in Fiddlestix have the opportunity to perform at String Recitals throughout the year, with the ensemble performing as part of the Sheldon College Week of Music Festival each August. The purpose of this ensemble is to develop reading, listening and ensemble skills in preparation for Intermezzo Strings.

Times - Thursday, 2:20pm to 3:10pm.

Year 3 Strings

The commitment is year-round with one lesson per week. All Year 3 students are involved in this group and initially commence learning their instrument in class groups with lessons during the College academic timetable. Students are mostly new to their chosen string instrument and are encouraged to continue learning in Year 4. Selected students may be offered group or private lessons at this stage.

Performances may include College assembly performances and Junior College Concerts.
