Jazz, Rock and Latin Ensembles

Big Band

As the name suggests, the Big Band creates a big sound, with our most experienced jazz musicians covering a range of styles including blues, funk, swing and pop/rock.  This ensemble performs at least one Jazz Nights each year, and were featured as the main performance group at the 2013 Lord Mayor's Multicultural Ball in Brisbane City Hall. Towards the end of 2013, the band took out almost every major prize at the RedFest Jazz Competition, and in 2014, the Big Band was the first school ensemble in four years to be invited to perform at the Manly Jazz Festival alongside Australian jazz greats.  In 2015 and 2016 this group performed at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Open Day and were invited to be guest performers at their Commodore’s Ball in 2015.

Instrumentation - Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Electric Bass, Rhythm Guitar, Piano, Drums. From time to time, singers are called upon for vocal numbers.

Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz Ensemble provides an opportunity for intermediate musicians from years 7-10 to discover the joy that is jazz and improvised music. In the Jazz Ensemble, students will develop the skills needed to advance to the Jazz Professionals program in later years, with an emphasis on stylistic conventions and performance experience. A broad range of repertoire is covered, from classic big band numbers to contemporary funk and rock styles.

Instrumentation - Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Vibraphone/Auxiliary Percussion, Bass, Drums. From time to time, singers are called upon for vocal numbers.

Jazz Project

Each year, select members of the Jazz Ensemble will be invited to form the Jazz Project, which focuses on small-group jazz performance. Students learn to improvise over common jazz tunes, and perform regularly both internally and externally. The theory behind improvisation and jazz soloing is also a strong component of this ensemble.

Instrumentation - Instrumentation varies each year but can include: Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Vibraphone, Bass, Drums. From time to time, singers are called upon for vocal numbers.

Dixieland Band

Sheldon College is very proud of the Dixieland Band. This 7-piece ensemble specialises in the classic New Orleans sound that originated 100 years ago, and the group has retained the same traditional / acoustic instrumentation. Recent highlights include performing at the Lord Mayor's Multicultural Ball (Brisbane City Hall) in 2013, and entertaining the crowds at Day 3 of the First Ashes Test (the 'Gabba, November 2013) where their rendition of Waltzing Matilda was featured on the Sky Sports Channel in London. Entry into this special group will be by audition from 2015.

Latin Ensemble

The only school-age Salsa / Latin Band in Australia, this exciting group specilaises in music from Latin-America, representing ethnicities such as Afro-Cuban styles and the music of Central and South America. Since 2013 the Latin Ensemble is a show-stopper at the annual "Fiesta Latina" held in West End, the heart of Brisbane's multicultural music scene. The popular band is beginning to incorporate authentic Spanish vocal numbers into their repertoire. In 2014 this ensemble was also awarded Champion Band at the Brisbane Ekka from a pool of 120 ensembles.

Instrumentation - Trumpets, Saxophones, Trombones, Keyboards, Rhythm Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drum kit, Claves, Cowbell, Maracas, Timbales, Vocals.

Soul Band

Incorporating styles from Musical Theatre, R&B and Mowtown, this hugely-popular ensemble features some of our most experienced instrumental and vocal students.  This band features as the "Corporate Band" at the close of the Arts Academy Awards. Places are limited, so entry will be by audition at the end of each school year, with special auditions at the start of the new school year for students new to Sheldon College.

Instrumentation - Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Keyboard, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drum Kit, harmonised vocals.

Tension

Tension is a contemporary ensemble for students in years 9-11. This group combines strings, vocals, rock elements and electronic instruments to create a genre-crossing sound and a unique experience for Sheldon College students. The group performs a wide variety of repertoire from artists such as Snarky Puppy, Muse, George and A Perfect Circle. Entry is by invitation for string players and audition for vocalists and rhythm section instrumentalists.

Instrumentation - Vocals, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Keyboard, Synth, Bass, Drums, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass. Auxiliary instruments/players may be added based on repertoire requirements.

Rock Band

The Rock Band is for students from years 6-8. This ensemble performs rock and pop music from the 1960's-current. The aim of the Rock Band is to provide outstanding Middle College vocalists and "Rhythm Section" instrumentalists (such as drummers and guitarists) with the chance to learn, rehearse and perform contemporary music and the confidence to join the senior ensembles in later years. Places are limited, so entry will be by audition at the end of each school year.
