On 30 July 2008, 62 students, 35 parents and 10 staff embarked on a journey of epic proportions – the Beijing Olympics as part of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Orchestra.
The fourteen day adventure in August of 2008 saw our students perform on the world stage as part of a 2008 piece Olympic Orchestra. Our students were pushed to their very limits and driven to perform at their highest level of ability whilst standing next to some of the best university musicians from across the globe.
Students proved their worth on a global scale by undertaking the journey. The training has begun. Students were involved in two intensive training sessions each week covering marching fundamentals and orchestral rehearsal in addition to several workshops and day camps throughout the year. During this time they memorised over 30 minutes worth of repertoire and performed this whilst completing a marching drill with extreme precision. The students experienced hard work, commitment and dedication to make this once in a lifetime experience a reality.
This was very much a community effort and relied heavily on the support of many of the talented teachers from across our staffing body. Miss Sarah Carey-Gorey, Mr Matt Cocking, Mr David Coit, Mr Ryan Livings, and Miss Nicole Spargo were intimately involved in the instruction of the marching drill and orchestral score. This wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of these wonderful teachers, ably supported by the tutelage of the many fantastic casual Instrumental Music Tutors employed by the College.
